Sheffield, South Street Methodist New Connection chapel was built in 1827. It was situated on the north side of South Street between Rockingham Street and Eldon Street. In 1851 there was a chapel which provided 80 free and 740 other sittings and a Sunday school set well back from the chapel and fronting onto Eldon Street, In the 1880s alterations and additions designed by A.H. Goodall of Market Street, Nottingham were constructed, and the chapel underwent “restoration”. The front section of the building shown in the engraving is from a much later date than 1827. Was it perhaps the main feature of Goodall’s extensions? A comparison with other examples of his work might be instructive. By 1901 the construction of the chapel and a school and subsequent enlargements had cost £8000. A further £400 had been spent on an organ or other instrument. The chapel seated 700 and the school 500. It had been closed by 1935.
