Blake (nee Moxley), Charlotte (1799-1836)

Charlotte Moxley  was born on 16 September 1799 at Porthcasseg, St Arvans, Monmouthshire, to parents George Moxley, a farmer, and Elizabeth Parry. She was the sister of James Moxley who became a Bible Christian minister.

She married Charles Blake (1797-1872), a Bible Christian minister, on 30 March 1829 at St. Arvan’s, Monmouthshire. They had four children, three sons who died soon after birth on 1 February 1830, 10 August 1833 and 28 September 1836, and Alfred Moxley, born 5 October 1834, who survived.

Charlotte died on 5 October 1836 at Portcasseg, and her widower published a memoir, which is appended.  The copy was supplied by Grace Jones, the wife of Charlotte’s 3 x great grandson, for which we are very grateful.

The memoir is based on Charlotte’s diary and letters, and is a first hand account of the mission to the Forest of Dean and Monmouthshire from 1820. Charlotte and her family were converted in October 1823, and Charlotte became a class leader in December 1824, and a local preacher in January 1824. She continued to preach until her health failed in 1836. It appears that William O’Bryan wished her to become an itinerant preacher, but she felt that her mother could not spare a second child for the ministry.
