Moxley (nee Roberts), Elizabeth (1810-1887)

Elizabeth was born on 21 April 1810  at Mevagissey, Cornwall , to parents Richard and Mary.

She married James Moxley, a Bible Christian minister on 31 March 1842 at Mevagissey, Cornwall. They were married, as most people were then, in the parish church, and it is interesting to note that James is described as a ‘Yeoman’ (like his father) and not as a minister of the Gospel. They had four children.

  • Edwin (1845-1924) – a bankers clerk (1881)
  • Charlotte Elizabeth (1847-1922) – married Henry William Pinnell, an accountant (1911), in 1874
  • Eliza Mary (1849-1943) – married Silvanus Webber, a general draper (1911), in 1877
  • James (1851-1853)

Elizabeth died on 31 December 1887 at her younger daughter’s house in Torrington, Devon. An obituary can be found in the 1888 Bible Christian Magazine.

Elizabeth was a Local Preacher in the Mevagissey Circuit from 1830 onwards, and information from her descendents Alexandra Gilbert and Grace Jones suggests that she stopped when she married, but resumed after her husband’s death. Her nephew Edward Roberts also became a Bible Christian minister in Canada, becoming President of the Canadian Conference.
