The fishing community in Newlyn Cornwall in the 1900s had to be a strong one. For the lives of these fishermen and there families where often difficult. So it is not surprising that Faith and religion played a big part.
My ancestor Henry James was a fisherman and in later life a Seaman’s Missionary in Fowey. He was a staunch Methodist and did a great deal to support the local community.
Henry lived a long life until the age of 78 . On his headstone is the phrase ” Safe at port” befitting for a seaman.
The Methodist faith has been passed down many generations , including my own family.
