Appleby, Chapel Street Tabernacle was built in 1837. It was situated on the west side of Chapel Lane close to the High Street. In 1851 it was said to be occupied by the Wesleyan Methodist Association had 100 free and 140 other sittings. When the ground plan was surveyed in 1859 it was labelled as belonging to the Wesleyan Reformers although they had merged with the Association in 1856 to form the United Methodist Free Church. The plan shows a plain rectangular building set back behind an enclosed fore court. The central entrance was approached up a step but there were also entrances towards each side which seem to suggest the presence of a basement. This building was replaced by another, probably built on the same site, in 1870
