Winkleigh Bible Christian chapel

Castle Street EX19 8HU

Winkleigh Methodist Chapel, was originally a Bible Christian chapel and Sunday School. It still carries the datestone  “Bible Christian Chapel 1883”.

It  has rubble walls with yellow brick dressings and a slate roof with decorative ridge tiles and wrought iron finials.  The interior has a gallery and folding doors at the front so it could be used for other purposes.

It is a Grade II Listed Building and you can see the specification here.

  • Thank you for this. The chapel at Winkleigh still exists, and because it is now a listed building we can see what it still looks like. These photographs are of another Bible Christian chapel. My reading of the date would be 1850, so it is possibly a chapel at Merton. If the photographer was stationed at Winkleigh it can’t be too far away. I am hoping that other viewers of this page might recognise it, and let us know.

  • I have found some pictures on Flickr taken by a Norwegian airman stationed at Winkleigh in 1945 that I try to add info to, hence I googled my way here. Because There are three pictures of a sheep farmer and son(?) and sheep. Over the door: Bible Christian Chapel (but I parsed the year as 1830?). So I am wondering if this is the same building. Here is the Flickr link, this is the middle picture. The one before and the one after are at same spot. Licence appears to be All rights reserved, but there is contact info on the page. The airman died in 1990, so not public domain. https://www.flickr.com/photos/nahaarchives/52304468728/in/album-72177720301504749/lightbox/
