Barnsley, Old Town United Methodist Free Church chapel was in being by 1888. It was situated on the east side of Greenfoot Lane between School Lane and Thorntree Lane. In 1888 there was a house called The Poplars behind the chapel and fronting on Thorntree Lane. This building, or a replacement, had become a Sunday school by 1904. This building had passed into non-Methodist hands by 1932 when it was called St. Paul’s Mission Church.
