Ilkeston, South Street, Wesley UMFC Chapel, Derbyshire (ii)

Reproduced with the permission of the National Library of Scotland

Ilkeston UMFC Chapel (ii) was built of brick in 1845. It cost of £1200 and seated 700. A Sunday school was built in 1864 at a cost of 1000. A ground plan of 1879 shows the chapel in the centre of grounds laid out with paths and plantings of different kinds. The un-named building in the corner was probably the school building of 1879 whose grounds had their own rather complex layout. By 1940 the seating capacity had fallen to 390 in pews. There were two school halls and four other rooms. The chapel had been closed by 1970 and the site is now occupied by a large building which has a Job Centre on the ground floor.
