G.W. Oxley adds:
Batley Commercial Street, Zion Methodist New Connexion Chapel was built at an unknown date to replace an earlier and smaller building, qv. By 1901 £11000 had been spent on the original construction and subsequent enlargement of the chapel, school and a manse. A further £1000 had been spent on purchasing an organ or other musical instrument. The chapel seated 1200 and the school 750 In 1940 the stone built chapel seated 1170 in pews and there were three school halls and five other rooms.

  • The building described and illustrated was a rebuilding in situ of a chapel of the same name built in 1854, according to West Yorkshire Archives.

    Batley Zion is a listed building and the list tells us that it was built in 1869 to designs by Walter Hanstock and Michael Sheard of Batley.
