The former United Methodist Free Church Chapel is a large, classical building built of red brick with ashlar quoins and dressings, It was built around 1860. This is the chapel:

The Ordnance Survey Grid Reference is SE 3310 2066. You can see it on 1892 – 1914 Ordnance Survey maps here:
As a consequence of Union in 1932, this chapel closed on July 28th 1935 and was, then or later, bought by the GPO.
It is a listed building: you can see the listing here here:
By contrast the former Primitive Methodist chapel on the opposite side of Market Street a little further down, in 2023 appears unloved and neglected.

The chapel was designed in 1857 by James Simpson (1798-1864) a very well known and prolific architect of Methodist buildings. I have embedded a photograph taken from a different angle to those referenced.
