Chirk Bank United Methodist chapel

The Llangollen Advertiser of 2nd August 1907, page 5, contains an account of the opening of a new schoolroom at what was then (just)  Chirk Bank United Methodist Free Church

“CHIRK METHODISTS.
OPENING OF A NEW SCHOOLROOM. A new schoolroom was opened at Chirk Bank United Methodist Free Church on Thursday. The schoolroom is the first part of a suite of buildings which is in course of erection on the same site. The suite consists of church, school and minister’s house … “.

Thanks to Janice Cox for providing the reference.  You can read more about the chapel and see a picture on Janice’s Shropshire’s Non-Conformist chapels website here It tells us that a new chapel was opened in 1908, by which time, the United Methodist Free Church had become the United Methodist Church by joining with the Bible Christians and the Methodist New Connexion.

In 2021 it is still open for worship

  • This chapel was sold in July 2023. Some good photos of the interior from the local press are still available online.
It was designed in the Arts and Crafts style by Frank Shayler (1867-1954) and Thomas Ridge, who had recently built a couple of chapels for the Welsh Wesleyans in Montgomeryshire.
