Bessie Alice Bull was born in St. Olave, Southwark in the second quarter of 1876 to Jabez Barnabus Bull and his wife Alice Susannah. Jabez was a baker.

Bessie was sent out to China as a Bible Christian missionary in 1902 and she was definitely regarded as a minister as her stations are recorded in the Minutes of the Bible Christian and United Methodist Conferences as follows:

1902 China

1903 Tong Chua Fu

1904 Chau Chuan Fu

1905 Tong Chua Fu

1906 Chao Tong

1907 Chao Tong

On 10th December 1907 she married Rev Alfred Evans , a fellow Bible Christian minister, in Yunnan Fu and ministered alongside him. When Alfred Evans pointed this out in an article on their work in The Missionary Echo of the United Methodist Church (1913, p123), the editor added a note to say “this is actually true”.

The photograph was taken whilst they were in England on furlough. Her story is more fully told in Pearl and Bessie

Bessie died on station in Kunming, Yunnan on 10th June 1941.
