Edmund Butterworth was the first of a number of young men who went out to the East African mission field and died young.
He was born in Manchester on 17 January 1841 and died at Ribe on 2 April 1864. He is buried there, alongside his colleague Charles New and Rebecca Wakefield.
His obituarist, and the editor of the United Methodist Free Churches Magazine both felt that he had great promise, but the only evidence of his ministry is his letters back to the Missionary Society, and his obituary, both of which are attached to this account.
