Robert Moss Ormerod was born in Hodnet Heath, Shropshire on March 8 1869, but soon moved with his family to Carlisle. He became a Local Preacher in Carlisle and was apprenticed as a printer. He offered for the ministry in 1890 and was accepted in 1892, when he was sent to East Africa.

He was stationed in Ribe from 1892 to 1895 and then in Golbanti from 1895 to 1899. He married Miss Annie Brown in Mombasa on 25th March 1897, she having been trained in nursing and midwifery before being sent out by the church as his partner.

He died in Lamu on September 22nd 1899, and the story of his ministry was told in Joseph Kirsop’s book ‘Life of Robert Moss Ormerod, missionary to East Africa
