Hull Osborne Street Independent Methodist/Methodist New Connexion Chapel

Hull, Independent Methodist Chapel was built in 1823/4 and passed to the Independent Methodists in 1826. In 1851 it provided 122 free and 560 other sittings. This source does not specify a location but it probably refers to the building on the north side of Osborne Street described on the ground plan of 1853 as “Independent Chapel (Methodist).

The building contained two elements. The larger, which was entered directly form the street by two doors shared party walls with the neighbouring buildings. Towards the back of the site the building narrowed to provide side yards and a small room. The plan recorded the sittings as 800 including 100 free.

By 1888-9 when another ground plan was made the chapel had become the property of the Methodist New Connexion. Apart from the frontage which appears to be rather different, the building was little changed since 1853.

By 1901 £1598 had been spent on the original construction and subsequent enlargement of the chapel and school. A further £120 had been spent on purchasing an organ or other musical instrument. The chapel seated 400 and the school 200
