Sholing Manor Road, Southampton

By the mid 19th century Woolston was well established on the east side of the River Itchen, across from Southampton and Sholing was developing to the north of it. There is a website maintained by the Local Studies Department of Southampton Central Library which has a section on Methodism and sections on each of the chapels. It seems to owe quite a lot to a book published in 1964 by local historian Jim Brown to commemorate the silver jubilee of St Andrews Methodist Church.

In 1899 Bible Christians built a chapel in Manor Road, Sholing. Became United Methodist in 1907. In 1934 merged with Obelisk Road Wesleyan chapel in Woolston to build the current chapel in Manor Road, known as Woolston Methodist Church and now the only Methodist church still functioning in Woolston and Sholing. The 1940 Buildings list says Manor Road chapel was damaged in the war. It seated 370 on chairs.

Keith Guyler hasĀ  two photos of Manor Road.

Geoffrey Goodall’s Closed Chapels document has various notes under Sholing and Woolston.

There is a post on My Methodist History website covering all the chapels.
