Adwalton, Zion Methodist New Connexion Chapel(s?), Yorkshire
Adwalton, Zion Methodist New Connexion chapel was built around 1800. In 1851 it provided 50 free and 350 other sittings. By 1901 £3000 had been spent on the original construction and subsequent enlargement of the chapel, school and two houses. A further £270 had been spent on purchasing an organ or other musical instrument. The chapel seated 266 and the school 250. In 1940 the chapel estate consisted of the chapel which seated 450 in pews, a school hall and five other rooms. The buildings shown in the block plan of 1891 correspond perfectly with the buildings in the photograph. The chapel stands in a rather awkward position sideways on to the road. Insofar as it is possible to judge from an old photograph it seems to have been built in the late nineteenth century, perhaps shortly before the 1891 map was made. Could the school building with its unusual curved gable (seen to the left of the picture) be the original chapel of c.1800?
