Staveley Lowgates United Methodist Free Church

Lowgates, Staveley, Chesterfield S43 3TT

A recent walk on Google Street View revealed the former United Free Methodist chapel building on Lowgates, Staveley.  Although it looks as though the building has not been in use at least since Street View first visited in 2009, in 2021 it is still recognisable.

The chapel appears on Ordnance Survey maps of:

  • 1938/9 as Meth church
  • 1914 as Meth Free Church
  • 1897 as Meth chap. (Free United)

but I cannot find it on the 1940 list of Methodist buildings – which might be because I don’t know what it was officially called.

Derbyshire Record Office has marriage registers of 1915-1981; baptism register transcripts from 1877 – 1953; various other records from 1870 – 1999.

What’s the story?

  • Tony Smith has been in touch with the editors to tell us that there is a photograph of this building on the Staveley In Pictures Past and Present Facebook page. If you are interested in Staveley this would be a good group to join.
