Richard Wakefield was born on 29 August 1833, in Derby, to Thomas and Juliana Wakefield. His parents were Baptists, and in 1851 his father was a porter in Chester. Richard’s younger brother Thomas also entered the United Free Methodist Ministry, becoming the pioneer of the mission to East Africa. Before leaving for the mission field, Thomas succeeded Richard in his first two stations in Cornwall.
The 1851 census records that Richard worked as an apprentice to a printer before entering the United Methodist Free Churches ministry.

Later life
Richard returned to his trade as a printer in 1864, and also returned to Camelford in Cornwall. His daughter’s birth is noted in the Royal Cornwall Gazette on 29 April 1864 when he is described as a printer. At the time of the 1871 Census he was a letterpress printer, and by 1881 a printer and bookseller.
Richard died on 5 February 1882 in Camelford.
Family
Richard married Mary Jane Johnson, the daughter of the man to whom he been apprenticed, in 1859 in Nantwich. They had six children
