The Magazines 1797-1907

a selection of online resources

All the denominations who came together in 1907 to form the United Methodist Church published a Magazine. These are full of information about the doctrine and activities of the denominations. Whilst all having their own distinctive flavour, they share an interest in informing the membership about connexional events (Conference or Assembly, foreign missions, stations of the preachers, portraits of leading ministers or members) and local activities (revivals, meetings, chapel openings, appeals for money). They are a very useful source, if you can find a copy. The following list is of material that may be found online.

The Methodist New Connexion Magazine. Published from 1797 to 1907, a run of volumes covering the years 1845 to 1885 may be found here

The Bible Christian Magazine   Published from 1832 to 1907, and described as being ” a continuation of the Arminian Magazine” a run of volumes covering the years 1852 to 1885 may be found here

The Wesleyan Methodist Association Magazine. Published from 1838 to 1857, all but the first four volumes are made available here

The United Methodist Free Churches Magazine  Unfortunately there are very few volumes of this work freely available online. My advice is the search using your favourite browser.

Comments about this page

  • Do we know at least the approximate circulation for each year (1832-1907) for the Bible Christian Magazine? Some issues have been scanned and are on-line, some exist in Iibraries and others seem elusive, e.g. 1851, probably in private collections and book stores.
