Abraham Hyams was born in Kingston, Jamaica, on 16th November 1820, to Marcus Hyams of the Ashkenazi Congregation of Jews. He converted to Christianity in his teens.
He married Eliza Catherine Hayes (1819-1894) on 11th April 1842 at the Wesleyan association chapel in Kingston, Jamaica.
