Lee, Herbert (1878-1949)

Obituary from Minutes of the Methodist Conference

Born at Hartlepool in 1878. Trained at Ranmoor College, he entered the Ministry of the Methodist New Connexion in 1902.

He served the Church with distinction as Chairman of the Halifax and Bradford District in 1923, on the Connexional Chapel Committee, and on the Board of Trustees for the Warhurst Bequest.

His ministry was marked by outstanding qualities of mind and soul. Strength of character and independence of thought made him a force amongst men. Loving good literature, he revealed in the pulpit not only the breadth of his reading, but how surely what is good and beautiful had become part of his own nature, for there was a quality in his preaching still vividly remembered. The study of psychology keenly interested him, and be was known as a wise, understanding counsellor of his people. A student all his days, he. was also a great encourager of young men.

He had a fine physical presence, a gracious, kindly spirit, and an infectious sense of humour. He was always a charming, lovable Christian gentleman, and his ministry bore rich fruit.

He was called home on 19th October 1949, at the age of seventy-one and. in the forty-seventh year of his ministry.
