A new contribution to My Primitive Methodists by Chris Wells showing a former Primitive Methodist chapel in Smallbridge prompted further investigation. Sawbridge Primitive Methodist chapel was not listed in the 1940 Methodist Church Buildings Report Districts ‘B’, Circuit 221 Rochdale (North), but a 700-seat United Methodist Free Church chapel is listed for Smallbridge on Spring Mill Walk. Chris suggests that perhaps the Primitive society joined the United Methodist chapel after reunification in 1932.
The chapel can be seen on the 1890, 1907/8 and 1939 Ordnance Survey maps opposite Windham Street, on the junction of Spring Mill Walk and Royal Street. Street View shows a relatively new detached house on the site in 2008.
What’s the story of the chapel and the people who made it?
