Obituary from Minutes of the Methodist Conference
Born at Sheffield in 1876. His native city held a conspicuous place in his life and ministry.
Entering the Ministry of the Methodist New Connexion in 1899, he was trained at the Ranmoor Theological College in Sheffield. In 1936 he commenced an eight years’ term in the Sheffield (Carver Street) circuit, and was later appointed as a Supernumerary to the Chaplaincy of the Firths’ Almshouses in Sheffield.
He was a man of choice spirit, scholarly tastes, and wide reading. His friendships were rich and enduring:
He was an able preacher exercising a fruitful teaching ministry, a beloved and untiring pastor and an excellent administrator. He rendered fine service to the Halifax and Bradford and Rochdale Districts of the United Methodist Church as Chairman.
Teacher-training was an outstanding feature of his ministry. He was a man of wide human interests, a musician of ability, and a lover of outdoor sports, excelling at tennis and golf.
He leaves a fragrant memory of a faithful minister of Jesus Christ, a devout soul, gracious, modest, and well-beloved.
He died, after a painful illness bravely borne, in the Royal Hospital, Sheffield, on 24th November 1949.

Family
George was born in Sheffield, in the 4th quarter of 1876. Beckerlegge believed him to be the youngest child of Rev James Stacey, but there is no evidence in the 1881 census for that assertion. He was however executor of the will of Mary Alice Stacey, a daughter of the Rev. James Stacey, and his own executor was a grandson of the same man.
As yet, no evidence has emerged as to his life before entering the ministry.
He married Bertha Sutcliffe (1876-1947) during the 2nd quarter of 1903 in Ecclesfield Bierslow Registration District. They had a son, who died young and adopted a daughter
George died on 24th November 1949 in Sheffield.
