This is a list of chapels that had been registered by 1867, derived from ‘A list of places of meeting for public religious worship, certified to the Registrar General’.  Remember that registration was not compulsory. As registration was valid until cancelled, however, there may be duplication: i.e.  both the old and new chapels in a place may be listed. An example is Bethel Bible Christian chapel in Drybrook.  It was replaced in 1860 by Providence chapel, but both are listed. Conversely, in Cheltenham Bethany Wesleyan Methodist Association chapel was no longer in use by 1867, but the chapel that replaced it does not appear in the list. We have also discovered that the official location may not be the same as the name by which the chapel is commonly described.

All three denominations which eventually became the United Methodists were present in the county. The Bible Christians missioned the Forest of Dean. The Methodist New Connexion were not particualrly successful, being restricted to Bristol and Gloucester. In 1861 they had had two other chapels in the Gloucester area. The United Methodist Free Churches were very strong around Bristol

Unless otherwise stated each of these places of worship is described as a chapel.

The numbers on the list relate to places, and match those on the map. In some cases the number represents mre than one chapel. The base map is provided under this licence
