An old photo taken at a Conference circa 1890

I found the attached picture among my father-in-law’s effects (Rev Graham Caink, who died 2 years ago). There is a suggestion that it might be A Bible Christian Conference (?Hicks Mill): it was backed by some packing case wood which had written on it in rather ancient handwriting “to be left at Victoria Inn, Calstock” (Graham had been a minister in Callington around 1970)

Is it of any interest? I won’t be keeping the print but there are a lot of faces capable of recognition – around 1890 perhaps?

  • I suspect that this photograph was probably taken in the late 1860s, not 1890. This is because the gentleman in the front row, 4th from the right, is definitely James Thorne who died in 1872. He had a distinctive face, beard and haircut! I’m pretty certain that the man in the second row from the top, third from right, is my Great Grandfather Rev. William Bryan Reed who was President of the BC Conference in 1881 and whose aunt was married to James Thorne.
