Joseph Kendall was born on 19th December 1827 in Ashby, Brigg, Lincolnshire. He was the son of Thomas Kendall and Frances ‘Fanny’ Dennis. Thomas was the village carrier. Joseph was one of ten sons and a daughter who survived to adulthood. Six of the ten brothers were ordained in the Primitive Methodist Church – Amos , Charles , Dennis, Henry, Thomas and Joseph.
Before entering the Primitive Methodist ministry Joseph worked as a servant in Gainsborough.
Joseph’s stations as a Primitive Methodist minister were:

- 1851 London I
- 1852 disappears
He joined the Wesleyan Reformers in 1855, becoming minister of the new Wesleyan Reform chapel in Louth, and with his congregation became part of the United Methodist Free churches in 1859. His stations were:

Joseph married Charlotte Stanton (1830-1914) on 21 June, 1855 in Doncaster, and they had seven children:
- Maria Eva (1856-1922)
- Charles Thomas (1858-1926)
- Emily Annie (1859-1891)
- Susanna (b&d 1864)
- Alfred Henry (1870-1944)
- Effie Susanna (1871-1963)
- Fanny (b&d 1873)
He died on 16th September 1890 in Waterloo, Blyth, Northumberland.
