Inscription reads:
In memory of Samuel Thomas Thorne
Born Launcells, Cornwall, October ?? 1860
Died at Chao Tunc, China, September 23rd 1891
He was converted while a pupil at the College, became a Minister of his own church in 1880, and went forth at the call of Christ in 1885 to preach the gospel in China.
From his lips thousands heard for the first time the name that is above every name.
He laboured with cheerful fidelity till stricken down with fever.
With his dying lips he preached Christ crucified to the Chinese.
“He overcame ??? loving not his own life unto the death”
