  • I recognised the name Bosanks on this register so shared it with our friend Cynthia McVey, formerly Cynthia Bosanko, and the names are from her dad’s family. Here’s a little of the story:

“Various family groups arrived in the massive influx of skilled labour in the 1860s and 70s for the mining of haematite ore. My auntie once told me it took William Henry three days to travel up to Haverigg. They had five children and I couldn’t understand at first why only Richard Henry and Edith Annie are on the list so then I decided to check the date of the Anglican church in the village and it makes sense now. The church was built in 1891 and my dad’s dad was born in 1892, the two younger ones after that. So I’m assuming they were christened at St Luke’s (my grandparents are buried there).

When I was growing up I always used to wonder why some families had “funny” accents and it was a long while till I understood it was the Cornish.
Other spelling variations are Bosanco and Besanco. There is a variation also in the Christian name of one of the mothers on the list – Mary Ann and Mary Hannah are the same person and on her marriage certificate she is called Mary Anna.”
