The former United Methodist Free Church on Spark Lane, Mapplewell became business premises and in 2023 is in residential use as Bethel Gardens. Dated 1829, the two storied building is built of stone with a  Welsh slate roof, hipped at the rear.

It is a listed building and you can see detail and a picture here.

Thanks to Jonathan Fox for the two pictures of groups outside the chapel, retrieved from his family archive.  Paul believes the pictures were taken around 1910.  Paul’s great aunt, May Bamford,  is on the front row of the smaller group, third along on the right.

Further north-west along Spark Lane are both former Methodist New Connexion and Wesleyan Methodist chapels

Comments about this page

  • I’ve added two pictures of groups at the chapel, provided by Jonathan Fox. The pictures were initially submitted to My Wesleyans, our sister site, requesting help in finding the unknown location.
We were able to identify the chapel as Mapplewell as it was the only chapel built in 1829 on this site. Google Street View confirmed the building still exists in 2023.
