This is a list of chapels that had been registered by 1867, derived from ‘A list of places of meeting for public religious worship, certified to the Registrar General’.   Remember that registration was not compulsory. This seems to have affected the Methodist New Connexion in Staffordshire, as Methodist records identify twice as many chapels open in 1867 as are recorded in this list. Even so, more MNC chapels were registered than in any other county but Yorkshire. The Potteries was a particular area of strength. The under-reporting is much lower for the Free Methodists.

As registration was valid until cancelled, however, there may be duplication: i.e.  both the old and new chapels in a place may be listed. There are a number of examples in the list below. We have also discovered that the official location may not be the same as the name by which the chapel is commonly described.

For convenience the chapel in Dudley, which was administratively part of Worcestershire is listed on this page.

Unless otherwise stated each of these places of worship is described as a chapel.

The numbers on the list relate to places, rather than individual chapels, and match those on the map. The base map is provided under this license this licence
