Holbeach Hurn United Methodist Free Church, Lincolnshire

The village has also been known as Holbeach St Luke (from c.1870), and prior to that it was part of the parish of Holbeach.

Opened in the 1860s on Hillside, firstly as a member of the Spalding United Methodist Free Church Circuit (until 1882) and then the Holbeach UMFC Circuit. In addition to Reformers from the village were those from the Wesleyan in neighbouring Holbeach Marsh (Holbeach St Mark) where division had been acrimonious. Notwithstanding the proliferation of Free Methodism in the area, this chapel functioned little more than forty years.

Closed by 1907 when it was sold by the Circuit to the Rev John Oakley (vicar) and thereafter used as a general parish hall and venue for the local Working Men’s Club. Kelly’s Directory (1909) erroneously refers to the building as a former Primitive Methodist. Date of demolition unknown. No known image.

  • From the Stamford Mercury 22nd November 1907:
“The Rev John Oakley, Vicar of Holbeach St Luke’s, has purchased the Free Methodist chapel at the Hurn and intends using it for a Reading Room. This building has in turn been used as a dwelling house, a day school and a Sunday school, and for a number of years as a Free Methodist chapel, locally known as the Long Chapel.”
