The account of the opening of the new chapel in the Methodist New Connexion Magazine has been added. The foundation stones were laid on Good Friday 1874, but the chapel was not completed and opened until 12th December 1875.
The new chapel was built on the site of the previous Sunday school. Once the congregation had moved into the new building, the old one was converted into a Sunday school.
The architect was a local man, Edward Potts, who went on to design a number of other chapels.
As can be seen from the postcard. the buildings were in the Italian style. The internal dimensions were 51 feet by 62 feet. There was a gallery round three sides, and “the plan has been carefully studied to secure perfect sight and hearing” for each of the 1050 people it was designed to seat.
The entire expenditure in 1875 was £6000, and the minister was proud that they had raised more than £5913 when the chapel was opened.
In 1901 the premises consisted of a chapel, school and manse whose construction and subsequent enlargements had cost £10250 A further £1600 had been spent on an organ or other instrument The chapel seated 900 and the school 600.
